Guwahati: Assam Police have arrested two people, including a retired Army jawan working on contract with the force, for allegedly sharing security-related information with a Pakistani intelligence operative, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Sunday.
The arrests were made based on inputs from central intelligence agencies, Sarma said. He added that the two suspects were allegedly in contact with Pakistan and had been sharing information about the movement of Army personnel.
“We will hand them over to the central agencies,” Sarma said at a press conference.
According to the chief minister, initial findings suggest the suspects may have been honey-trapped by individuals seeking to obtain sensitive information from them.
Earlier on Sunday, Assam Police said its Special Task Force (STF) had arrested a Bihar resident in Guwahati for alleged espionage-related activities.
The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Abhishek Kumar Singh from Purba Champaran, was allegedly involved in passing confidential information concerning security forces to a Pakistani intelligence operative, according to the police.
The initial intelligence input about Singh came from Military Intelligence of the Tezpur-based Gajraj Corps, police said. Acting on the information, the Assam STF, in coordination with Sonitpur Police, carried out further inquiries and allegedly found that Singh was involved in activities described as anti-national and was acting on the instructions of a Pakistani intelligence operative.
The STF conducted an operation during the intervening night of October 3 and 4 and apprehended Singh from a rented house in Guwahati, according to the police statement.
A mobile phone, SIM cards and documents described as incriminating were recovered during the operation, police said.
Further investigation is underway.
